SERMON SERIES:

Some people at think we “talk about Jesus too much” and some
think that we “do not talk enough about Jesus.” Maybe it’s the how
we talk about Jesus that is really at stake. Maybe our spiritual
liberation isn’t complete until we liberate Jesus from our own
conventional and restricted views of him.
Since no one person or tradition or denomination has the final word
on Jesus, but some seem to have a louder voice than others right
now, it’s time we made our voice heard in a particularly queer way
about the subject.
The Jesus that gets the most press in our country right now is
nearly unrecognizable. It’s time for a makeover.
And if we take seriously this radical prophet from Nazareth, then it
will include our own spiritual makeover as well.
Our creative liturgical and drama teams will breathe inspiration and
innovation into our services.

What is Lent?
Lent is the period from Ash Wednesday until Easter. Christians
observe various traditions during this time, including fasting
or "giving something up for Lent", special acts
of charity, greater intentionality in prayer and reflection.
At MCC San Francisco, we embrace Lent as an opportunity for spiritual
renewal, as a period where we look ahead with anticipation to the
transformation promised at Easter, and through personal and communal
spiritual practices, to make connections to Goddess/God and to
each other that will comfort us in the depths of our grief, and
sweeten the flavors of our joy.
Do you have to give up something for Lent?
Perhaps. Lent might be a good time to let go of something that
is getting in the way of living the life full of joy and peace
that is the promise of our traditions. It might also be helpful
to re-think Lent as a time of embracing what your soul needs, instead
of self-denial.
Do you want more peace?
Imagine Lent as a time to embrace peace. Try attending Taizé every
Wednesday at 7:00 PM for a few weeks. Give yourself a chance to
be in the presence of the Holy in the midst of the candles and
singing.
Do you want to deepen your connection to
God?
Take extra time to be with God in the way that's most meaningful
for you, in worship, in the company of friends, reading, praying,
walking in nature. Or, join a Get Connected Group, details on how
to do that are in the column to the left.
Do you want less clutter in your life?
Try fasting from consumption - try a day, a weekend or a week
without buying anything. Clean out your closets and give away things
you don't need. The folks at our Shower Project would appreciate
your clothing donations.
Embracing. Letting Go.
Embracing Lent can be as simple (and as challenging) as listening
to your heart, and just taking time out to feed your Spirit. Be
a part of the journey to transformation at MCC San Francisco during
this season of Lent.
