| Over the last thirty-two years we have been fortunate
as an organization to have a wealth of spiritual and cultural resources
from which to create and nurture a unique and ever-evolving queer
spirituality.
The people who make up the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender communities come from the full range of human
experience and each person brings a gift to the spirituality that
is the hallmark
of MCC San Francisco. Our spirituality is creative,
thoughtful, and active. Drawing from myriad talents and experiences
we develop new expressions of our spirituality that appeal
to a widening world of seekers.
We build on our traditions
without being hemmed in by them, remolding them to better
approach our changing experience of the divine.
Our spirituality
leads
us to act boldly and passionately in a world where words
and plans are plentiful but where helping hands are most
needed. What San Francisco—indeed
the entire world—needs is a place in which queer spirituality
can be conceived, nurtured, and encouraged with the hopes
of transforming ourselves and the world in which we live.
Such a place would be the “house of prayer for all
people” spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, and which
we at MCC-SF have claimed to be for many years. We propose
to build that place in the heart of San Francisco. We are not certain of all the details,
but we are certain of the vision.
In San Francisco there
will be a place that will become
known
as a significant place of spirit, thought, and action.
Our
community needs such a place to develop its spirituality,
our new witness.
The world needs such a beacon as this place. We at MCCSF
want to provide that place for ourselves, for the community,
and
for the
world.
