"A person who sings prays twice"

Metropolitan Community Church San Francisco Choir

The Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco is blessed to have a strong music program with three choirs and a variety of instrumentalists.

The volunteer musicians in our community have a diverse background of skills- some read music, some are participating in music for the first time- but the common purpose to share the joy and love of the Divine through music is clear.

We have a great time together and invite you to join us!

Opportunities for Participation

The Many Names Choir sings classical and traditional music for the 11 am worship service on Sunday mornings.  This choir rehearses Sunday mornings at 9:30am and one Saturday a month.  We are currently looking for altos and woodwind and string instruments.

Worship & Praise Team is a gospel ensemble that leads music for the 7 pm Worship and Praise Service.  The Team is made of four-part vocals, acoustic piano, Hammond B3 organ, electric guitar, electric bass, drum kit and brass.  The choir rehearses at 5 pm on Sundays and one Saturday a month.  We are currently looking for basses.

On Wednesdays, the Prayer at the Heart Ensemble gently and powerfully leads congregational singing for the 7 pm Taize prayer service.  Currently, a cello, clarinet and two flutes make up our orchestra.  With rehearsal at 6:15 pm, all instruments are welcome, especially those who are learning!  We are blessed with tenors and basses in the choir... our steadfast soprano would like some company!

Here's what we looked and sounded like at the MCC General Conference 2007:

If you are interested in participating in the MCCSF music program, please contact our Music Director, Stephanie Smith, by emailing or by calling (415) 865-2762.

The Worship and Praise Team Is Going On Tour!

The Worship and Praise Team travels to Florida this July to visit old friends, make new ones and participate in GALA Festival 8 in Miami.  On July 7, the Team will begin at Christ Covenant MCC in Decatur, Georgia where we will connect with our beloved Rev. Tessie Mandeville, Lisa Heezen, Kent Brintnall, Rev. Chris Glaser and Wade!  Following a concert on Tuesday night, we'll get up bright and early to travel to Gainesville, Florida, for a concert with Trinity MCC with Rev. Joe McMurray and Eric Cole.  After a nice BBQ hosted by Joe and Eric on Thursday, we'll load up and drive 2 hours to Tampa to give a concert at MCC Tampa where Rev. Phyllis Hunt in Senior Pastor and her partner, Vilia Corvison, is music director.  Vilia was part of the Team several years ago and Phyllis is near and dear to our heart.  The next day, we'll get up early again and do the last big push to Miami where we hope to connect with MCC Miami and share our gifts with them.

MCC Worship and Priase Team tour blog buttonOn Saturday, July 12, the Team has a sound check at 1:30pm in the Ziff Ballet Opera House.  The Worship and Praise Team is proud to be a member of the Gala and Lesbian Association of Choruses, Inc. (GALA) and honored to be the first church music group to perform at a GALA Festival.  Many GALA Choruses have been formed or supported by open and affirming congregations, but never has a music group like ours been part of GALA.  Opening ceremonies for Festival 8 begins at 8:15pm.  This year marks the 25th Anniversary of GALA Choruses, Inc.  Keep the organizers of this momentous event in your prayers.

Sunday, July 13 is the big day!  The Team performs for 2,500 delegates at 1:30pm and will make history.  Many of our local brothers and sisters are also participating in Festival 8: members of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, Lollipop Guild, Vocal Minority, Oakland East Bay Gay Men's Chorus, Golden Gate Men's Chorus, Counterpoint and the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco.

On Wednesday, our own Carolyn Eidson and Stephanie Lynne Smith star as "Fifi and Fanny" to co-host the World's Greatest No-Talent Show with the always zany Eric Lane Barnes, assistant artistic director of the Seattle Gay Men's Chorus and artistic director of Captain Smartypants.

The Tour will be life-changing at GALA Festival 8 in Miami, July 2008. Many delegates will hear the welcoming sound of God's voice through our musicians.

Pray for us and help support us!  Below are tangible ways you can help us get to Florida:

  • CDs from the Music Department are on sale before and after Sunday services.
  • Attend the Occidental Glee Club Concert on May 31 at 7pm in Chorissima Hall. 100% of proceeds will go to the Travel Fund.
  • Support the Saturday, June 7 garage sale in the Castro!
  • Attend the Worship and Praise Team Pride Concert on Saturday, May 14 at 7pm in Chorissima Hall.
  • Sponsor a team member.  4 individuals need help with flight and hotel.
  • Underwrite a van.  We're renting 4 vans and an equipment U-haul to travel from Decatur to Miami.  It's expensive!
  • Keep us in your prayers.
