A Message from Dr. G. Penny
Nixon
MCF Board President
I want a better world. I want a world where
people actually feel like they belong. I want a world where
people feel like they belong because they can contribute
fully who they are in all aspects of their lives. I want
people to bring their whole selves to worship, to work, to
their relationships, to each other, to their beloved community,
and to the God of many names.
The only way that we are going to have that world is to
work together. To create this new world, a fundamental change
in people’s hearts and minds is required. We must understand
and act as if we all matter, as if we each matter. We must
understand and act as if the living earth and all the living
beings on it matter. We will manifest that change in attitude
through political action, through advocacy, and through social
service. All of those changes can and must come from spiritual
community.
Metropolitan Community Foundation and MCC San Francisco
care about deeply QUEER issues, and that's not enough. What
we are here for is to work with everything that we have,
our full passions, for sexual orientation rights, for gender
identify, to stop the abuse of people who are considered
sexually different. And although those things are very important
to us, they never can be separated from sexism, from economic
injustice, from triumphalism, classism, ageism, and any other “isms” that
separate us from each other and from God.
I believe that QUEER people have a special role to play
in creating this new world. We say we are about love. We
say that’s what matters most to us, what identifies
us. Is that love, when placed into action, enough to change
the world?
I think that awakening QUEER people to the possibility that
they have the power to change the world is part of what our
community of spirit is about. If we are about love, than
we have to apply that to every area of our lives. And I want
to give all my energy to creating that kind of world. That's
what I'm calling our people to do, and to do it in every
way imaginable.
