Get Involved At MCC San Francisco

Opportunities for Volunteers

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

— Mahatma Gandhi
Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love...

— Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

There are many opportunities to serve at MCCSF. We have found that once folks get involved on one of our volunteer teams, they start to really connect with others and feel invested in our community.

Current Volunteer Teams

Administrative Volunteer Team

Sound administration provides the foundation for everything we do at the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco. Our Administrative Volunteer Team is critically important to the success of our worship services, social justice efforts, events and programs, and community outreach.

We currently have a very strong team with room for growth in new directions. The areas we are interested in developing include "greening" all that we do at MCCSF. We would like to include the use of powerpoint in our worship services, and are seeking those with the knowledge and experience to develop powerpoint presentations and run them during worship services on certain Sundays each month. Each member of the Administrative Volunteer Team may choose the level of responsibility they would like to take on. Come and be a part of the very lifeblood of the church—this team is essential to the ongoing well-being of our community! For more information please contact Shelley Kutilek at skutilek@mccsf.org.

Communications and Marketing Team

The Communications and Marketing Team promotes MCCSF to both internal and external markets under a unified branding strategy. It also promotes MCCSF as a hub for the queer community in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. It is responsible for:

  • Expanding outreach to core MCCSF constituency in order to attract new members
  • Promoting MCCSF programs to current attendees
  • Maintaining a dynamic Web presence through the MCCSF web site, Facebook, YouTube, and other venues

Congregational Care Team

Our Congregational Care Team was commissioned in Spring 2009 out of the conviction that providing care and support to our congregants is not the sole purview of ordained pastors, but of all those who have the gifts of compassion and caring. Members of this team have received special training to skillfully listen and unobtrusively care for those going through life’s challenges. In collaboration with our pastors, our Congregational Care Team works to be the hands, feet, heart and presence of God/dess for those going through crisis.

To be involved on this team requires special training that is offered periodically. If you are interested in serving on this team, please contact Rev. Jeff Bert at jbertmccsf.org or 415.865.2761. More information is also available at our congregational care page.

Fundraising Team

The mission of the Fundraising Team is to spread this word as far and wide as possible.

MCC San Francisco is a beloved community which depends on the support of people just like you to sustain our ministry to all people and work toward transforming the world.

The Fundraiing Team accomplishes this through a wide variety of fundraising activities, including our annual pledge campaign, garage sales, major donor events, pet calendar, entertainment events, an annual change drive, and much more. We welcome new volunteers and fundraising ideas, as well as donations of all sizes, shapes, and denominations.

We have one primary goal: to raise the funds MCCSF needs each year to sustain our worship services, educational programs, social justice initiatives, and the life of our beloved community.

For more information about the Fundraising Team, please contact Carolyn Eidson at ceidson@sbcglobal.net.

MenSpirit

MenSpirit places a strong value on social and community-building events, which enhance participation in service and spiritual events. MenSpirit fosters a deepening of friendship among the men of MCC.

When we know each other better, we do more. MenSpirit events include potluck dinners, game nights, bowling nights, movie nights, and outdoor recreational events. Men from MenSpirit often volunteer for the annual men's retreat and all-church events such as "manning" the gates at the various street festivals. MenSpirit also participates with WomenSpirit and TranSpirit on various events:

  • Monthly Potlucks: The potlucks are social activities. They are usually held weekday evenings and begin with socializing and sharing a meal. There is also an update of upcoming events.
  • Games Nights: We gather for an evening of food, fellowship and friendly competition at an assortment of card and board games. Past themes have included “Post Oscar Blues,” and “Games and Dessert.”
  • Cultural “Outings": MenSpirit has sponsored evenings at the theatre—“When Pigs Fly” & “Love’s Labors Lost”—as well as at the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera.
  • White Elephant Holiday Party: Not only is this Holiday Potluck a great evening of community building and holiday cheer, but the gift exchange is a great excuse to get rid of that eyesore artwork or that chachka from your Aunt Betty.
  • AIDS Memorial Grove: MenSpirit and the HIV+ Support Group gather for a day of gardening, fellowship, and reflection as we memorialize those who have been lost to the AIDS pandemic in this life-giving way.
  • Men's Retreat: A church-sponsored event open to all men of the church. MCCSF men gather each year at the beautiful and remote Saratoga Springs Retreat Center. It is an opportunity to meet other men from the church on a more personal level, and to enhance your spirituality.
  • Other Events: MCCSF AIDS Quilt Panel, St. Patty’s Day Breakfast (joint women and men), Homecoming Dance.

We invite you to join us. Please take a look at MenSpirit past events: MenSpirit 2008 White Elephant Holiday Party and our MenSpirit Hike and Picnic in 2008.

Music

The music program at MCCSF is a vibrant example of life-transforming courage. If you'd like to find out more about the MCCSF Music program, please go to our Music at MCCSF page.

Social Justice

Our Social Justice team provides services and advocacy for individuals—the hungry and homeless, those living with HIV and AIDS, and those facing discrimination—and work to change the systems that dehumanize them. If you'd like to find out more about the MCF/Social Justice Programs, please go to our MCF/Social Justice page.

WomenSpirit

WomenSpirit sponsors a variety of spiritual and social opportunities for all who identify as women.

  • Solstice and Equinox Rituals: Four times a year, at the time of Solstice and Equinox, WomenSpirit hosts a ritual to celebrate these changes of season. Sometimes we have a bonfire at Ocean Beach, sometimes a ritual in our sanctuary. These are always occasions for celebrating, letting go of the past, and embracing the changes in our lives while honoring Mother Earth. It is also a time of connection with other women. These rituals are planned by women in our community. We welcome your participation in planning and/or celebrating with us.
  • Friday Night Thing: Simply a time of good food and social time with other women from MCCSF and their friends, Lisa Eller has been hosting this monthly gathering for more than six years. If you are interested in coming to a Friday Night Thing, please contact Lisa at
    lisaellersf@yahoo.com.
  • Women Outdoors! From time to time, women of MCCSF gather in the great outdoors. Whether a walk on the beach with our dogs, a weekend at Cheri D's cabin in the mountains, or an all-day hike in the East Bay hills, these events are initiated by individual women in our community and always provide fun, friendship and the joy of our beautiful Northern California outdoors.
  • Women's Retreat Annually, there is an MCCSF retreat for all who identify as women.

In connection with MCCSF staff, these retreats are planned by volunteers to provide a place for community-building, individual spiritual growth, and connection with other women at MCCSF.

Other events are created from time to time by and with individual women in our community. In the past we've gone to theater and concerts, had a private tour of Good Vibrations, and sung for residents of nursing homes. The possibilities are endless, limited only by our imaginations and willingness to create!

If you are interested in WomenSpirit, or want to join our mailing list (to receive periodic emails about upcoming activities), please call the MCCSF office at 415-863-4434 or email mccsfbjb@aol.com.
