Located
in the heart of the Castro, MCCSF is a 35-year old community
built on a foundation of being "A House of Prayer for All
People" - Isaiah 56:7. This congregation is a new
witness to God's all inclusive love, called to a prophetic
ministry of peace and social
justice, with a vision that the world will be unified
through acceptance and celebration of human diversity.
We are a progressive church,
influenced by liberation, inclusive, feminist as well as
traditional Christian theologies. We celebrate God's
image as both feminine and masculine, and the embodied
integration of sexuality and spirituality.
Our congregation of more than 550 members is rich in diversity and
shares respect and great value for every individual's spiritual journey.
Transformation Happens
Whether it be over issues of sexuality and denominational doctrine or
intellectual freedom, MCCSF is a place where religion and spirituality
can be reconciled.
MCCSF is also a place where many find their spirituality awakening for
the first time, or renewed following years of spiritual dormancy after
coming out.
We primarily serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
community; however, our services,
programs and membership are open to all.
Each week, nearly 1,200 people representing more than 25
community-based organizations are served through our building.
Our social service and program arm, The
Metropolitan Community Foundation, works to meet the basic needs of
the most vulnerable in our community, including: children from
low-income families; homeless women, men and children; all those
affected by HIV/AIDS; and all people facing discrimination, harassment
or physical violence.
The Gifts of Transformation are for Everyone
At MCCSF, the Communion sacrament
of bread and juice is offered at all our Sunday and holiday/special
services. At each service prior to serving Holy communion, the blessing
of the Sacraments is followed by these words:
"Everyone is welcome to share the bread and cup of
grape juice in memory of Jesus, and as a sign of God's love for us and
our love for each other. You do not need to be a member of this church,
or of any church. This table is open to everyone. These are the gifts of
God for all the people of God."
Holy communion has often been used as a ritual of exclusion. At MCCSF
the communion ritual serves as a moving affirmation of God's loving
nourishment being readily available to all.
